In many regions, legal aid organizations and other access to justice stakeholders are witnessing an increase in the number of pro se litigants seeking assistance with consumer matters. A large proportion of these litigants are low or moderate income, or are aging adults or otherwise vulnerable. Technology innovations hold potential to increase the assistance available to in consumer matters and to enhance legal service providers’ capacity to serve them. This session will highlight examples from Virginia and several other states that illustrate how online forms, mobile technology and other tech tools are being used to expand services for litigants who have to navigate consumer debt and other financial justice issues. We will also cover new developments in an app that detects risk for financial exploitation among aging adults.
