Immigrant children and children of immigrants often face barriers to education and have unique legal needs as they interact with the education system. This session covers high impact advocacy that attorneys can provide for their child clients or children of their adult clients to ensure that they have access to public education and that they preserve their eligibility for immigration relief to which they may be entitled.
The session will also cover fundamentals of education law including the rights of homeless youth, enrollment, language access, and Child Find; and will provide an overview of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. It will also address special issues that have arisen for children and their families in the past 8 months. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to advocate for their clients and how best to push local school systems to better serve immigrant youth and children of immigrants.
